27 Apr 2006 - Middlewood Winners

MIDDLEWOOD Winners are trying to bring the community of Middlewood together with a Middlewood Festival.

Middlewood Winners is a neighbourhood group formed eight years ago by residents to tackle local concerns.

Over the years, the group and its ideas grew and their goal became to provide excellent childcare facilities, youth services, healthcare and training opportunities, all in a safe, welcoming environment close to home.

In the past, the group ahve held children's fun days, health consultaions and family discos, also taking part in the strategic planning and redevelopment of the park.

After commissioning surveys by Sheffield University and the local Primary Care Trust, the Winners decided which facilities to provide for the local community.

First it was decided a building was needed, and although the pavilion had suffered years of neglect, the group managed to secure its lease after four years.

After consulting GP's, Parks and Housing officers and the residents the group sought funding for their project.

Their grant applications have been accepted and along with their fundraising they have raised over £1,600,000 for the project.

The festival will be held on Saturday August 19th in Middlewood Park. Although much planning has already been done, more volunteers are needed.

Chair of Middlewood Winners, Wendy Wells told Look Local: " Middlewood is an ever expanding community and with this in mind the aim of this festival, is to provide a bridge to bring local people together in the green open space that we all share.

Its an opportunity for residentsof Beeley Wood, Middlewood, Hillsborough, Wadsley Park Village, and our neighbours to come together for one big day of fun."

"We hope you will come along and find our about your local area and the many opportunities there are to be had. Lots of groups will be there to offer information and support in addition to the fun activities and attractions."

"We are looking for volunteers to help us with the festival and would be pleased to get anyone involved. We actually have no men involved, so it would be great to get some help!"
